Values as of October 31, 2026. The range covers the middle 50% of comparable sales and listings. These figures are a starting point: a specific bag's skin, condition and color can put it well above or below them.
How is a handbag's fair value calculated?
We blend two kinds of price. Auction results show what buyers really paid, so they carry 60% of the weight. Marketplace asks show the current market, so they carry 40%. We take the median of each after removing outliers, which stops a single six-figure Himalaya from setting the number. If a bag has fewer than three auction results, we use asks alone. Matching matters as much as the math. A Mini Kelly, a Kelly Pochette and a Kelly 25 are different products at different prices, so each comparison has to be the same model in the same size. Listings with no stated size are left out for the same reason.
What moves a handbag's price the most?
Size. Smaller sizes lead. A Birkin 25 is valued about 47% above a Birkin 35, and a Kelly 25 about 90% above a Kelly 32.
Skin. The median exotic Birkin 35 in our Sotheby's data sold for $27,904, against $12,902 for standard leather. That's about 2.2×. See Birkin value by size and leather for the full breakdown.
Rarity. The top result in our current data is a white matte Niloticus crocodile Himalaya Kelly 28 with 18K white gold hardware, at about $181,376.
Hardware. Less than people assume. Standard leather Birkins with gold hardware had a median of $19,085, against $18,637 for palladium.
Why are asking prices higher than sale prices?
Asks are what sellers hope for. Sold prices are what the market agreed to. The gap varies by bag. The median Birkin 25 ask is about 38% above its median auction result, and the Kelly 28 gap is about 49%. The Birkin 30 and 35 gaps are much narrower, at about 7% and 5%.
Two cautions when comparing them. Published auction prices generally include the buyer's premium, so a seller receives less than the hammer figure suggests. And asks can sit on the market for months without selling. If you're pricing a bag, start from sold prices.
What about Chanel and Louis Vuitton?
